Hungry Filmmakers V kicks off the spring season at Anthology Film Archives on May 16, with our latest installment of film screenings/discussions of seven unique, up-and-coming food-related films.

The panel will be moderated by George C. Stoney, NYU Professor Emeritus and legendary documentary filmmaker.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., films start promptly at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available for advance purchase at Brown Paper Tickets. Admission includes films, the panel hosted by George Stoney, and a post-event reception with Lagunitas beer, wine, and snacks.

Queen of the Sun:

From the director of The Real Dirt on Farmer John comes a profound, alternative look at the tragic global bee crisis. Juxtaposing the catastrophic disappearance of bees with the mysterious world of the beehive, Queen of the Sun weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heart-felt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world. Featuring Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva, Queen of the Sun reveals both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

Blue Gold: World Water Wars:

Based on the ground-breaking book by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, Executive Produced by Mark Achbar (The Corporation) and Si Litvinoff (The Man Who Fell to Earth), narrated by Malcolm McDowell, Blue Gold: World Water Wars sheds light on the world’s rapidly approaching water crisis and suggests that wars of the future will be fought over water, as they today over oil, as the source of all life enters the global marketplace and political arena.

Soul Food Junkies:

Filmmaker Byron Hurt explores the health advantages and disadvantages of Soul Food, a quintessential American cuisine. Soul food will also be used as the lens to investigate the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement that has been born in its wake.

Texas Huntress:

An adventure in modern day hunting and gathering, following three carnivorous women's quests to face their fears, load their guns, and meet their meat. Travel through ranches in Texas, valleys in California wine country, grasslands in Argentina, & South African bush country; mastering a series of hunting techniques: using rifles, shotguns, bows. A sustainable chef from each region provides a menu; a guide teaches the tactical skills of tracking and stalking. The women explore emotional and physical implications of modern meat consumption by embracing the process of field-dressing and skinning, apprenticing under their chef’s guidance, and ultimately hosting a captivating, at times contentious, dinner party, sharing their spoils with chefs, crew and surprise dinner guests over a beautiful feast.

Starved for Attention:

Using photos and footage from some of the best documentary photographers in the business,Starved for Attention is seven short films about childhood malnutrition around the world. Doctors Without Borders has started a petition to press governments to do more to combat malnutrition. If you were moved by the film or agree with its themes, please add your signature.

Hungry Filmmakers- Featured Event of Eat, Drink Local Week

New York's finest gathering of film and food will return for its fourth program at
Anthology Film Archives on September 28, 2010. The event was founded with the aim of drawing more audiences to up-and-coming documentary films and the urgent food-related topics they concern in a lively atmosphere that promotes discussion. Hungry Filmmakers is proud to participate in Eat, Drink Local Week, a week-long celebration of food throughout the city.

Hungry Filmmakers IV schedule includes films that explore fascinating niches of our food culture. From evaluating the healthy advantages and disadvantages of Southern food in Byron Hurt's Soul Food Junkies, to a profound look at beekeeping in Taggart Siegel's Queen of the Sun; a feminist tale of hunting in Ashley Chiles' The Texas Huntress, and the troubled state of our water supply in Sam Bozzo's Blue Gold, Hungry Filmmakers IV will offer a smorgasbord of cinematic feast. Starved for Attention exposes the neglected and largely invisible crisis of childhood malnutrition.

Audiences experience a dynamic ten-minute excerpt from each film, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers or representatives from each. The panel will be moderated by Nicole Taylor, host of Heritage Radio Network's “Hot Grease” and self-styled “food culturalist.”

February Hungry Filmmakers Wrap-Up

The second installment of Hungry Filmmakers was an evening to remember. We have some pictures to prove it!

Fueled by curiosity, concern, support for Hungry Filmmakers, and maybe even Cathy Erway's feature of Hungry Filmmakers on her Heritage Radio Network Show- Let's Eat In or her mention of it on The Huffington Post, eager filmgoers filed in to watch excerpts from documentaries about an urgent cause- our food system. Here are a few brief descriptions:

End of The Line: A wake-up call to the world about the catastrophic impact of overfishing on our oceans: "Imagine the world without fish."

Fly On The Wall: Artist Marna Chester's one-woman mission to convince Brooklyn shop owners to let her hang a poster she hopes will promote healthy eating. An experiment in empowerment.

Fresh: Ana Joanes celebrates the farmers who are pioneering alternatives to industrial agriculture: "If Food Inc. was your wake up call, Fresh, The Movie, is your call to action"...

Mad Cow Investigator: Nancye Good tells the story of Janet Skarbek, a New Jersey woman who stumbled upon evidence of a mad cow disease outbreak in her community and was so outraged by what she learned that she became a muckraker a la Erin Brokovich and Upton Sinclair.

A post-show discussion, a petition for a garden at City Hall, pizza from Slice, beer from Lagunitas... Hungry Filmgoers had a full evening. But the star attraction was clearly the films.

Back by popular demand, the food documentary film screening and discussion event, Hungry Filmmakers, will return to Anthology Film Archives on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

The next Hungry Filmmakers will showcase excerpts from five food conscious films;

Hungry Filmmakers Call for Entries

Following the first successful, sold-out event at Anthology Film Archives on December 15, 2009, the organizers of Hungry Filmmakers are announcing a call for entries for future events.

Excerpts of documentary films will be selected based upon the film’s relevance to food and agriculture, quality of work/storytelling, and filmmakers’ commitment to attend the event. Preference will be given to films still in production/post-production and those that have recently been released.

There is no deadline to submit a film sample. Submissions should be 10 minutes in length, accompanied by a synopsis (100 words maximum) and mailed to:

Along with co-hosts, Jimmy Carbone & Tim Lynch, Hungry Filmmakers co-curators Cathy Erway & Shelley Rogers are committed to showcasing the work of documentary filmmakers who are contributing to the dialogue and growth of the sustainable food movement.

Hungry Filmmakers describes the innovative documentarians whose films dig into the agricultural quandaries facing our society today. Excerpts from six upcoming, food-oriented films will be featured on December 15, 2009 at Anthology Film Archives, followed by a lively Q & A and panel discussion moderated by food activist and author Anna Lappé. An After Party with hors d’oeuvres from local and sustainably-minded food and beverage purveyors will follow at nearby Good Beer Seal bar, Jimmy’s No. 43.

These six films offer unique perspectives and arguments on food, agriculture and eating more healthfully. Through these filmmakers’ efforts, the public has access to fascinating, real-life documents about this pivotal era in the “food movement.” Combined, the screenings reveal visions of hope and a shared mission to improve our food system and provide a perfect segue for further discussion.
